New York City – A Preview of What’s to Come

October 2nd – Our New York City adventure begins

Cruising the sky at 30,000 feet, we are on a red-eye special on our way to New York City! Plenty of time to tilt the seat back, close my eyes and get a few hours of deep, refreshing sleep so I can hit the ground running.

HaHaHaHa my mind laughs at my already over-stimulated self. Sleep, good luck with that one…

For the first time in like forever, I was all packed 24 hours before departure. I should be calm and relaxed. I should be dreaming about the things we plan on seeing and experiencing in the Big Apple like gawking at Time Square, watching a Broadway play, taking a stroll through Central Park, paying our respects at the 9/11 Memorial, visiting a world-class museum – the Metropolitan Museum of Art, peaking in the doors at the ever-so-impressive St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and enjoying the views from high above the city at the Empire State Building.

I have made an effort to keep this blog upbeat, neutral politically and simply share bits and pieces of our travel adventures. I wanted our stories and photos to be a place our friends could come to travel vicariously with us or to escape from some of the everyday craziness.

Instead, tonight, I’m caught up in a deep sadness about the tremendous loss of life and carnage that just happened in Las Vegas. The sounds of those rapid fire shots played and replayed on the news and Internet will haunt me for a long time. Tonight, I choose to quietly mourn for the victims, their friends and families.

I pray tomorrow brings peace and comfort and a start toward healing for those who are suffering.

GRATITUDE MOMENT: Today I am grateful for all of the heroes who rushed in to help, for the multitudes who waited in long, long lines to donate blood, and for the outpouring of love and condolences posted from around the world. I still believe that in the end, goodness will overcome evil.

COMING NEXT: New York, New York! And a return to my customary posts with too many pictures and an equal dose of optimism.

P.S. Top header photo of Manhattan skyline is one I found on the Internet, License free to use on Pexels.

  1. Have fun in the city of my birth.

I hate to say this, but that wallpaper site scoops up pictures from other sites without permission. You should also note their disclaimer. The pictures are for personal use only. They have been known to sue people who use them on blogs and so on. That’s funny, since they pretty much stole them in the first place.

  3. Hi Tim and Joanne Joseph,

I am KC Lim from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Firstly, let me say that I share your sadness and grief in what happened in Las Vegas. Secondly, I really envy both of you who have the time and resources to do what you really love – travel.

I am 65 and whilst travelling, meeting people and learning about other cultures is one of my greatest love, I am still practising as a lawyer and therefore, although the resources is not really an issue, time is.

As they say, “Time waits for no one” I wish you a pleasant and wonderful time (which |I am sure, you will) in NYC.

    • Hello KC Lim and welcome to our blog. Thank you for your kind comments regarding Las Vegas. We have not been to Kuala Lumpur yet. We had a cruise booked a few years ago that was scheduled to stop there, but unfortunately that trip was canceled. We do feel extremely fortunate to have the freedom to travel and enjoy our retirement years. Thank you very much for joining us as we explore New York City.

  9. Not too far away, Joanne. Peggy and I flew into Boston yesterday and took Amtrak down to New London, Connecticut to visit our son and his family. We could have continued on Amtrak right into NYC. Enjoy. And yes the new out of Las Vegas is tragic. Peggy has a friend who was in a hotel next to it. –Curt
