Nuremberg, Germany ~ History, Art, Surprise Concert, Authentic Local Meal

Nuremberg, Germany

This was our final morning on our beautiful Uniworld ship, the River Princess. We needed to be out of our cabin by 8:30 to allow time for the staff to clean and prepare the cabin for the new arrivals that would be boarding in just a few hours. After a leisurely breakfast, we relaxed and visited in the lounge until our taxi picked us up at our prearranged time of 10:00.

I realized that I had not shared any pictures from the ship other than a few random shots and our cabin, so wanted to show a few more spots before we disembarked.

Main lobby. This is certainly far less “grand”than one would find on
an ocean going ship, but still warm, welcoming and functional.
In the evening the entire dining room was reset up for proper sit down dining.

There were a handful of passengers who were staying on board and continuing on to Vienna, however the majority disembarked here in Nuremberg and were already on their way to the airport for their flight home. I was so glad we had chosen to spend one additional night in Germany.

I had suggested the Mövenpick Hotel Nuernberg Airport for convenience. What a lucky choice that turned out to be. It was quite literally across the street from the entrance where we needed to check in for our Lufthansa flight the following morning. I was a little concerned that we might have some airplane noise, but honestly I never heard a thing.

Our room at the Mövenpick Hotel

When our taxi dropped us off at the hotel, it was too early to check in to our rooms, but we were able to deposit our bags. After getting a local map, a few suggestions from the front desk, instructions on how to use the local metro, and a recommendation for lunch, we were ready to go explore Nuremberg.

We each purchased an all day metro pass. It took us
a few minutes, but we eventually figured it out.

Nuremberg will forever be linked to the Nuremberg Trials. Between 1945 and 1946, German officials were brought to justice for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Beyond its main attractions of the Imperial Castle, St. Lorenz Church, and Nazi Trial grounds, there are 54 different museums for arts and culture, history, science and technology, family and children, and more niche categories, where visitors can see the world’s oldest globe (built in 1492), a 500-year-old Madonna, and Renaissance-era German art. ~ Wikipedia

With so many options, and only one day, we decided to head towards the main square, Hauptmarkt, in Old Town and explore that area.

One of my favorite composers, Johann Pachelbel was born here in 1653, as well as actress, Sandra Bullock in 1964.

Model of St. Lorenz Church

St Lorenz Church was built in the 1400’s, heavily damaged in WWII and later restored.

I’m not sure how Brenda took this photo, but somehow she made me look taller and like I have long legs for the first time in my life at only 5’2”. Yay!!!

While taking photos inside the church we noticed that they were setting up for a concert. Upon inquiring, we found out that a group would be performing that evening at 7:00 and that a few tickets on the sides were still available. And what a bargain they turned out to be at only 15 euros. It was a no-brainer to return for the concert. But we still had a lot more walking and exploring to do first.

We teased Steve that as a retired CHP motorcycle cop he could not walk past a donut shop – so we didn’t. They had some delicious options.

Culinary tourists can taste the city’s famous lebkuchen, gingerbread, local beer, and Nürnberger Rostbratwürstchen, or Nuremberg sausages. ~ Wikipedia

Lunch time gave us the opportunity to track down a recommended restaurant, Trödelstuben, where we could sample authentic Bavarian food. The pork shoulder was excellent!

Some more miscellaneous pictures as we roamed the area.

We had time to check out another church, St. Sebald. World renowned composer Johann Pachelbel had been the organist here from 1695-1706.

By now it had been a couple hours since we had eaten, so of course it was time for a snack. The market was still in full bloom, so we found a vender where Brenda selected several kinds of hummus, olives, cherries and bread and we settled down for an impromptu picnic.

Time to return to St Lorenz for our evening concert, Monteverdi: Marienvesper. What a treat that turned out to be. Our seats gave us more of a “behind the scene” view of the performance, and TV filming. The acoustics and vocals were extraordinary and their conductor so animated.

It was finally time to make our way back to our hotel via the metro, get a light meal in the hotel restaurant and settle in for our last night before facing the long flights home early in the morning.

GRATITUDE MOMENT: Wow, what a day we had! Full of adventure, fun, exploring, trying new foods, seeing extraordinary architecture, impromptu picnic, relaxed pace, soaking up the local charm, beauty and history, a surprise concert and sharing it all with the dearest of friends. How blessed and grateful we are!

    • Well, I beat you – I actually gained six pounds on my 12 day vacation. Thankfully, it was mostly water retention and I have already taken it back off. 🤪. Yes, we are safely back home and settled back into mountain life. We are researching a couple more potential trips, but the only one actually booked is in November to Ethiopia with Dick and Karen. I wish you and Linda were joining us!

We also loved Nuremberg. We took a bus tour around the city, which was very informative. We got a good view of things, even the place the trials were held. We, of course, had lebkuchen and bought some to bring home. I had planned on giving some as gifts but we ate them all ourselves. Loved your photos. (Did you see the glockenspiel? It was amazing.)
