Volkach, Germany

June 29, 2023 ~ Morning

Volkach, Germany

We had both a morning and an afternoon walking tour today in two different cities, so I have decided to break this up into two separate posts.

Our day began in Volkach, the heart of the Franconian wine country. It is a region that has been making wine for countless generations. Although they produce a small amount of red wine, they are more known for their white varieties.

Here’s how Uniworld described todays shore excursion options:

VILLAGE DAY: HEART OF FRANCONIAN WINE COUNTRY

This picture-perfect region is cradled in the curve of the Main’s breathtaking horseshoe bend, wrapping itself around sprawling vineyards, rare wildflowers, countless fruit trees, verdant landscapes and quaint villages. There is a plethora of wonderful ways to explore here, and you’ll have the option to choose your favorite.

Perhaps you’d like to get acquainted with the village of Volkach, meeting local vintners and sampling their house wines along the way. Or maybe you’d rather take in panoramic views of the wine country before participating in a chocolate-paired wine tasting at the “Art of Chocolate” factory.

And if active exploration sounds more enticing, you can choose to bike past the many vineyards of Volkach on your trip to “Wine Island”, stopping for some refreshments before ending your tour with a nostalgic ferry ride. Alternatively, embark on a canoe ride through the Mainschleife nature reserve to experience the landscapes of wine country from a new angle.

We chose the tour option that included walking through the village of Volkach and meeting two local vintners.

This is the first of two wineries we visited.
They also have a Michelin starred restaurant

Next stop was a visit to St Bartholomäus Church dating back to 1413.

The village itself was smaller than others we had visited earlier on this trip, but the architecture did not disappoint. Shuttered windows, geranium flower boxes, lace curtains, artistic metal signs, half-timbered homes, and colorful fountains along with decorative statues and carvings on the buildings added to the charm.

Our second vintners operation was smaller but our host was very welcoming.

I had not seen a cigarette vending machine in a number of years.
Time for a little apricot ice cream with dark chocolate.
This adorable little girl was also enjoying her ice cream

COMING NEXT: The second half of this day was spent in Rothenburg.

GRATITUDE MOMENT: Today I am grateful for choices – chocolate factory, touring the area, walking through the village, tasting wine, paddling a canoe, taking a ferry ride or a bike ride. It was hard to go wrong no matter what we chose.

    • Curt, I’m hoping that we will get on a Uniworld cruise on the Nile next Spring. I would love to go to the new Egyptian Museum, but they have been a bit elusive regarding the opening date. Any highlights from that cruise that stick out?
