Bamberg, Germany ~ Cathedral, Town Hall, Rose Garden

June 30, 2023

Bamberg, Germany

Bamberg in its entirety is not only described as beautiful but has often been regarded as one of Germany’s most attractive settlements, with its picturesque architecture, intersecting canals and rivers, and charming stores and restaurants, all framed by rolling hills.

Bamberg was built by archbishops on seven hills and became known as ‘Franconian Rome’.

Once again we had two options on how we could spend our time here. Option #1: Bamberg walking tour or Option #2: Treetop Hike. We chose the walking tour. Although the treetop hike sounded very interesting, the recommended fitness level for participants might have been problematic

This is how Uniworld described the walking tour:

BAMBERG WALKING TOUR

Now a pleasant city with a lively student population and a world-famous symphony orchestra, Bamberg was the center of economic and political life for a huge swath of Central Europe in the Middle Ages. Spared WWII bombing, the entire heart of historic Bamberg is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The medieval layout of the city remains intact, along with 2,000 historic buildings.

In the background you can see the cathedral which
is where we are headed on our walking tour.

Bamberg Cathedral

We did not get to see the interior of the cathedral, but we did explore the plaza.

The rose garden, designed in 1733, is located right next to the cathedral plaza in the inner courtyard of the New Residenz.

Cross the cobblestone footbridge to the Old Town Hall, which is adorned with colorful frescoes, and ramble along the narrow lanes lined with picturesque half-timbered houses. ~ Uniworld

Old Town Hall shown behind us was built on an island

We had some free time once we crossed into the heart of Old Town. Tim and I wandered a bit, found a fabulous bakery, and checked out their Farmers Market. The produce looked amazing, especially the tomatoes.

Shortly after we returned to the ship, we went to the lounge and listened to a guest lecturer, Dr. Markus Urban, talk about the role Nuremberg played in World War II and the Nuremberg Trial. Our cruise terminates the next day in Nuremberg and I was so glad that we had arranged to spend an extra day there before flying home.

This was our final night on board and a special Captain’s Farewell Reception and Dinner was prepared for us.

We went through one of the tallest locks while eating dinner
And after dinner we were entertained by a guest guitarist, however attendance was light as many passengers were busy getting packed.

GRATITUDE MOMENT: Today I am so grateful that our cruise was a huge success. The weather gods cooperated, the itinerary was interesting, service was kind and helpful, we saw some new places, people on board were friendly, the food was delicious and our traveling companions were a joy to be with.

Next stop: We have one more full day in Nuremberg, Germany after we get off of the ship in the morning.

  1. What a beautiful city! I can see why it rates all the accolades. That first shot is especially lovely and I’m always up for a wonderful bakery. I’ve had such a good time following your adventures, so thanks for that, although I realize we’re not quite done yet. 🙂

Tim and Joanne, Thanks for the information about Bamberg. Beautiful photos. We will also stop there on our Grand European Tour with Viking (our first time with them) next September and, although we also will have included tours, like to do things like going to Art Museums or going to a grocery or clothing store (I needed a rain hat in Germany and the stores did not disappoint). Hopefully we will have time.

We may have traveled as much as you…but since Mike is a retired Social Studies Teacher, much of our USA travel has been related, for example, 1500 mile road trip to Presidential Museums and Libraries a couple of weeks ago. Mike had actually been to all of them, but some have been redone and he wanted to see them.

    • I think going into some of the local shops is a big part of seeing how/where the locals eat, shop, work and live. Although there were no “home visits” on this trip, that is usually a highlight for me. We did get to attend a food fair, checked out a couple farmer’s markets, attended a concert in a cathedral (next blog post), shopped at a grocery store, ate at a local restaurant and went clothes shopping at Jack Wolfskin. Usually we get into several museums, but this trip the only museum visit was in Zurich. Having enough time is always a challenge.

Your road trip sounds amazing! We have been to several of the Presidential Libraries, but still have several more to see.

One should never put off traveling to far away places until retirement, like me. This trip, from our traveling partners, to the eye opening visuals could not have been better. Traveling with seasoned company added greatly to the overall experience.
Tim and Joanne could not have made our first trip to Europe any nicer.
Now trying to figure out where next and when.

    • I am beyond thrilled that you and Brenda enjoyed your trip and could not be happier that you are looking at options for your next adventure. We did see some beautiful sites didn’t we! It is sometimes hard to grasp that what we experienced is just the tip of the iceberg. Fair warning: Once the travel bug bites, there is no cure 😃🥰😃

This was a really special day, highlighted by Dr. Marcus Urban’s lecture and Q & A.
Thanks for all this great information you share with us. I was there and I still am learning from you.
I felt like Steve and I had two tour guides. The one Uniworld provided, and you.
We sure got lucky on our first international river cruise (or first river cruise ever) to have such knowledgeable guides. Thanks for providing us an even more intimate learning experience.
We both spent part of this morning discussing ideas of our next trip. Thanks for making this one so memorable and meaningful for us.
