IOWA: Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum

June 5th ~ West Branch, IA ~

Hoover Presidential Library and Museum

As we expected, there is a bit of a learning curve when a third party joins us in the RV. We were up around 8:00 this morning, but by the time we got ourselves organized, waited out a thunderstorm, got showered, hair washed, had tea/coffee, ate breakfast, hooked the car up, and closed up the RV, it was 11:00 before we got out the door. Well, we are back on the road today. This time Tim and I have company (besides Gus that is). Tim’s mom, Shirley has joined us in the RV for the return trip. We will be taking the northern route from Illinois back to California with the intent of stopping at several of our favorite National Parks on the way. Continue reading

ILLINOIS: Small Town USA

May 26th-31st ~ Hume, Illinois ~

Memorial Day in Hume at the city park

Tim is from a split family, as many of our friends are. Growing up in a small farming community, everyone knows everyone. When we come back to his home town area, we try to visit as many of his family members as we can. Continue reading

ST. LOUIS: Missouri Botanical Garden

May 27th ~ St. Louis, MO

Missouri Botanical Garden

Our weather was hot and humid, but we were not to be deterred. Since it was a holiday weekend, finding an RV park in St Louis the previous evening became difficult. We ended up staying about 60 miles west of town, so after a lazy morning, a bit of a drive and a late breakfast at Cracker Barrel, we finally arrived in St Louis.

Tulsa, Oklahoma: Philbrook Museum of Art

May 24th ~ Claremore, OK

Philbrook Mansion and reflecting pool

Back on Route 66 out of Oklahoma City, we made our way north toward Tulsa. I have enjoyed seeing some of the old classic cars along the way and today we were treated to seeing a couple more.  Continue reading

Oklahoma City National Memorial Museum

May 23rd ~ Oklahoma City, OK

Murray Building after the blast that killed 168 people

Declared by Yelp a “Top 10 Museum in America”, I was anxious to see it for myself. Even knowing that it would bring up deep-seated sadness for all the lives lost, I knew that I had a lot to learn about the day that started like any other day… Continue reading

Texas: Groom Cross and Devil’s Rope Museum

May 23rd ~ Texas to Oklahoma

Old wagon inside Devil’s Rope Museum

Up and on the road at a decent time for a change. The reason??? We did not have any internet last night so:

  1. I could not write yesterdays blog
  2. We could not surf the Internet
  3. We went to bed at a decent time and slept well

It is amazing what unplugging from our electronics can do for you… Continue reading

TEXAS: Cadillac Ranch and Palo Duro Canyon

May 21st ~ TEXAS

The Cactus were in bloom

Back on Route 66, at least for a while today. Much of the old highway runs beside Highway 40, but sometimes it goes off on its own for a ways. We managed to get onto another section that turned into a dirt road today which kind of left a bad taste in my mouth. Continue reading

NEW MEXICO: Taos Pueblo, a World Heritage Site

May 20th ~ Taos, NM

Taos Pueblo

I woke up at 3:30 this morning with a loud bang, the RV shaking violently and a rather un-lady like “Oh Shit”. The wind was howling. I got up and went to the bathroom, and Tim followed shortly thereafter. I commented that the wind was blowing like crazy. His response, “Sure is” and he promptly went right back to sleep. Continue reading
