“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sailaway from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” ~ Mark Twain
The nutcracker, created in Germany more than 150 years ago, has become an iconic wooden Christmas decoration that’s popular around the world.
Frankfurt is known as the “Mainhattan” of Europe—“main” because the Main River flows through the city. A financial powerhouse with soaring skyscrapers as well as traditional Old Town architecture, Frankfurt is a city full of energy and culture.
Tim snapped this picture of our beautiful Dolder Grand Hotel as we departed. We had such a luxurious two night stay here.
Our plans for the day included checking out of our hotel and taking a bus ride to the ship. The original itinerary was supposed to have us departing from Basel (actually nearby Krebs), but as is sometimes the case with traveling, plans can get changed, even last minute.
I’m exhausted tonight as I’m trying to organize our photos and my thoughts about the day. After only getting around three – four hours sleep for each of the past three nights, I’m running on fumes. Insomnia has been making herself known. I’m really hoping to be able to catch up a bit tonight but it is after 11:00 pm in Zurich and I’m just getting started here. On top of that, Tim and I are waiting for a call from our veterinarian regarding our little dog, Maya.
Bright and (very) early Wednesday morning we drove down the mountain to arrive at our traveling companions home in Orange County. I had ordered an Uber XL to accommodate us and our luggage. Everything went as planned and we had more than enough time to get checked in, through security, have a nice leisurely breakfast and take off on our first leg – John Wayne airport in Santa Ana to Chicago.
Have you ever taken a cruise somewhere but never gotten off the ship? That’s exactly what Tim and I did last December, just before Christmas.
The four day itinerary was on Princess Cruise lines newest ship, the Discovery Princess. We boarded in Los Ángeles, and had stops in San Diego and Ensenada, Mexico before returning to LA.

We had been to both destinations before, and although we wouldn’t have minded doing some sightseeing in San Diego, the lure of just staying on the ship, relaxing, enjoying the shipboard activities, savoring the food, and spending time with our traveling companions, Dick and Karen, was a bigger draw.
We have been blogging and documenting most of our travels for the past ten years. Our fabulous “family” of subscribers has continued to grow and there are many who are new and may not know how our travel journey began.
When I wrote that we were getting back up on the horse, I probably should have said that we had placed one boot in the stirrup. Compared to years past, 2023 is getting off to a slow start.
BUT, the two trips already booked should be amazing!
When we travel, one of my favorite things to visit is the top museum in the area, city or county. What I have found repeatedly on our tours is that not enough time is allotted to do justice to the visit, but at least I get a taste of the history, art or relics on display.
Invited by dear friends to join them at the La Quinta Art Celebration, it took us all of about two seconds to say, “Heck yeah”!
La Quinta is located less than 100 miles from our mountain cabin in Southern California. We were fortunate to visit this beautiful venue in November last year.
This award-winning fine art and crafts event features premier artists from 31 states and six countries! You will find paintings, both 2D and 3D mixed media, photography, ceramics, glass, sculpture, fiber, wood and jewelry.
