February 23, 2020 ~ From Huntington Beach, CA to San Quintin, Mexico
Our travel buddies, Dick and Karen, had been traveling to a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Mexico to go whale watching for several years. Their stories and photos had made Tim and me envious. We finally decided to join them to see for ourselves why they were so crazy about this trip.
It was mid February, 2020, and COVID was just starting to become an issue. We had recently returned from Sri Lanka, where their first case had been diagnosed. We were aware of it, but when we departed on this road trip, there was yet to be any cases confirmed in California.
We rented a car in Huntington Beach the night before, and then purchased our Mexican car insurance just before crossing the border early the next morning. All went smoothly.
Since they were old hands at this, and had favorite places to stop for meals and lodging, Tim and Dick shared the driving, while Karen and I just sat back and enjoyed the ride.
Our first stop (and worth the trip for this alone), was brunch at the “original” La Fonda Restaurant in Rosarito. The food, setting, view, ambience and service were all wonderful. What a bountiful, delicious spread! And did I mention the FREE “all you can drink” Bloody Marys with Sunday Brunch? We, of course, drank in moderation since there were many miles of driving still ahead.
Another stop that afternoon was at La Mision. Here’s the thing – waiting so long before writing about this trip, I have not got a clue what we did here, other than snap a few pictures and admire the beautiful view. In fact, I had to ask Karen where these pictures were taken. My bad…
Boy did I learn a lesson! Don’t put off writing about a trip! Unfortunately, I still have this trip to complete as well as one more that we took last year. I’m glad that I have someone to ask the specifics.
Overnight our first night was at Don Eddie’s Landing in San Quintin. It was quite basic accommodations, which Tim and I are fine with. We were fortunate to snag a corner room with an ocean view which added to the charm of the place. There is a restaurant onsite.
GRATITUDE MOMENT: Today I am thankful that we got a little out of our comfort zone to drive in Mexico. Sometimes we let news events shape our decisions, which can be a shame, as the news is often sensationalized. It is of course important to be informed, to use normal safety precautions, travel during the daytime, and have reliable transportation.

We drove from Sterling, Alaska to Cabo, Mexico. We spent the winter down there in our cabover camper. We enjoyed it tons. We made our trip in 2000.

Years ago, Peggy and I took two month trip down to Baja as part of a year off we had taken from work. We managed to see the whales, which was great. But our highlight was hanging out in the little town of Mulege on the gulf coast. Absolutely idyllic. –Curt
