Traveling on the Glacier Express to Zermatt

I was sad to leave our little heaven on earth in Pontresina where we had been welcomed like family and treated like VIP’s. But it was time to once again catch a train.  Continue reading

Panorama Hike – A spectacular view in every direction

Wednesday, July 20th ~ Pontresina, Switzerland

Taking a hike...

Taking a hike…

So, what is there to do in Pontresina? We were blessed with beautiful clear weather so taking a scenic hike was top of our wish list. I wanted something not too strenuous, but would show us some spectacular views. Both Rick Steves book and our hotel recommended the exact same hike fittingly called the Panorama.  Continue reading

How my screwing up affected our trip – Getting from Lucerne to Pontresina

July 19th ~ Travel day Lucerne to Pontresina

View while traveling on the Bernini Express

Well, this was my punishment day for screwing up our reservations. The itinerary was intended to be one day taking the William Tell route from Lucerne to Lugano (overnight there for one night) and the following day taking the Bernini Express from Lugano to Pontresina. But since I somehow missed booking the night in Lugano entirely and had us staying in Pontresina instead, we had a lot of ground to cover in one day.  Continue reading

Appenzell

Saturday, July 16th ~ Appenzell, Switzerland

Appenzell, Switzerland

Appenzell, Switzerland

Yesterday we departed Zürich and made our way here to the small Alpine village of Appenzell. It is right out of storybook land. Lush green hillsides dotted with Swiss cows or the occasional goat, family homes with flower boxes beneath each window loaded with brightly colored flowers and an attached barn with shuttered windows painted contrasting shades.  Continue reading
