May 9th ~ Overnight Mt. Lassen KOA

This was another travel day as we had quite a few miles to get us from Medford to the KOA near the entrance to Lassen Volcanic National Park.
Our original plans had been to take the eastern road out of Crater Lake, then drive south towards Klamath Falls, visit the Lava Tubes and check out the prime bird watching area before entering Lassen on Hwy 89 from the NE.
But, with the roads still closed around Crater Lake, we had to do some last-minute reshuffling of our route.
No worries, the drive south on Interstate 5 turned out to be lovely as snow-covered Mount Shasta was having a particularly clear day and dazzled in the sunlight.

At one of our fueling stops Tim spotted this old-time Cocoa Cola ad on the side of the building.
I’m betting this goes WAY back
And the colors on this flower jumped out at me.
These colors remind me of Christmas

We still had another surprise up our sleeves for Laura and Michael – A CABIN FOR TWO NIGHTS!

We have managed so well with all four of us in our tiny RV, but even the best of friends need a little privacy and alone time every now and then.
We also had one last hiccup to deal with.
Road closed!
The road through Lassen was also still closed due to heavy winter snowfall, although it is hard to tell that from this location. On top of that, the final hurrah was intended to be taking the Bumpass Hell Hike which was closed for the entire season so that the boardwalk could be rebuilt.

The evening got topped off with another delicious BBQ.

If you plans ever bring you this way, we can give this KOA two thumbs up. It was spotlessly clean, well-managed and friendly staff, spacious campsites, and extra amenities to make you feel welcome. They have a seasonal swimming pool, lawn to play croquet, snack/gift shop, laundry, upgraded spots that include a patio and BBQ, and a play area for the kids. They even provide new rubber gloves at the dump site.
We thought this was a great campground – #2 rated KOA in the country!
GRATITUDE MOMENT: Today I am grateful that we can all remain flexible and do not get disheartened when an obstical is thrown in our path. That is key for being a good traveler – go with the flow and remain open to the possibilities…

Great trip, this is the route I am thinking about as I head up to Vancouver, WA on my way north in July. I’ll have to remember that KOA if the parks campgrounds are full.

Staying inside our National Parks is always my first choice, but this is a great alternative.
