May 5th – Cinco de Mayo ~ Gold Beach, OR
I know I raved about the Giant Redwoods that we visited the day before, but truly there are few places on this planet that are any more beautiful that the Southern Oregon Coast.
We set up camp at Indian Creek RV in Gold Beach for three nights.
I have been awakened by roosters crowing before, but this was the first time that a flock of turkeys has been my alarm clock. Yes, it did sound like “gobble, gobble, gobble”.
The small on site cafe offers up a nice breakfast for a reasonable price. Tim and I were able to split a meal and go away satisfied.
This morning we chose to drive north of Gold Beach to start our exploring at the Cape Blanco Lighthouse and then work our way back south toward Brookings.
Cape Blanco is located 9 miles north of Port Orford. Circa 1870, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as Oregon’s most westerly, oldest and highest point above the sea.
Tours are offered by a volunteer staff for a reasonable $2 per person. Closed on Tuesdays.
A small display is downstairs, and then we were invited to climb the stairs to see the views and lantern.
But this day was about smelling the salty air of the ocean, walking on the sand, viewing enormous boulders along the beach, and once again simply being in awe of how powerful and beautiful this area is.
Just north of Gold Beach, this stop offered up spectacular views. Do keep an eye on children however, as there are sharp drops along the cliff line as well as some areas that have been eroded and undercut.
Lunch break in Gold Beach where of course we had to have Mexican food to celebrate Cinco de Mayo.
Myers Creek Beach (Pistol River)
One of the most beautiful beaches in the world. In fact I have loved it so much that it has been the header picture on my blog site for the past five years.
Miller Creek???
This is a hidden gem, and unmarked, but I did spot a sign across the road nearby that is labeled Miller Creek.
Whales Head
Last stop of the day. Not as spectacular as some of the others, but still worth a mention.
There was quite a variety of blooms and other growing plants that jumped out and begged to have their pictures taken. Of course I obliged…
GRATITUDE MOMENT: Today has been one of those days that will remain firmly in my memory bank. Our weather was perfect, and I took great pleasure in showing off the extreme beauty of my homeland to dear friends. If you have never seen the Southern Oregon Coast, I encourage you to add it to your “bucket”, “wish” or “someday” list. Tim and I have been so fortunate to have seen many spectacular places around the globe, yet I can come “home” and still stand in awe and say “Oregon, you make me proud”.
This was probably my favorite day! The sun was shining down on beautiful coast and I was in awe of the gorgeous coastline

These photos are really inspiring for anyone who is thinking of visiting Oregon! We were lucky enough to visit the northern half of the Oregon coast a couple of years ago on a trip to the Pacific Northwest and I’ve wanted to return to see the rest of Oregon ever since. I love how wild that coast is. And you’re so right about the many shades of green that Oregon offers – good comparison to Ireland!

The entire Oregon coast is stunning. I may be a bit prejudiced to this section, but I must admit that both California and Washington have some pretty amazing spots as well.

Your photos really capture the beauty of the Oregon coast. It’s been over ten years since I crossed the Oregon Coast off my bucket list and I still have wonderful memories of our time there. Thanks for reminding me of how beautiful it is.

O.M.G. you have truly captured my favorite beaches in the world, right here in OREGON. I have visited most of those mentioned and have similar pictures in my own personal albums. WOW – makes me want to jump into the RV and take off…We used to camp at Arizona Beach when there was a terrific campground there above the beach.. Great times…Great memories. You have again tugged at my heart strings…. THANK YOU – THANK YOU.

Each of the beaches we showcased were a little different. We wanted to give an example of some of the variety and grandeur. Thank made me very happy to learn that someone already familiar with this area still enjoyed seeing the pictures 👍

As an Idaho girl, we’ve been to the coast many times. Your photos are fabulous, and do a wonderful job of showing off Oregon’s beauty! I’m so glad you got to share this wonderful area with your friends! ~ Lynn

Lynn, we are tentatively planning a RV circle through Idaho in August or early September. Any must see recommendations?

What I can tell you is that the real beauty of Idaho lies to the north. If you just cross the lower portion of the state, on I-84 you will see only the desert part. Central and northern Idaho are mountainous and gorgeous! But shhhhhh…..it’s our secret! 🙂

Thank you for sharing your Oregon trip. Makes me homesick, as I was raised there. Did you visit the botanical garden? I’m not sure, but I think it is at Cape Arago? Beautiful!

I understand that the gardens in Brookings are lovely this time of year, but sadly we did not have enough time to get there on this trip.

Since you were raised there, perhaps you can confirm the name of the one beach that I could only find a sign in the vicinity. I think it is really a bit of a hidden spot as it did not have a designated parking area like most beaches do.

I’m not sure. I’ve been away from Oregon many years now.

It really does look beautiful. I’ve never been that far west, and only then to Las Vegas for a work training. I’ve either stuck to the East Coast of the U.S. or Europe. My husband and I hope to head that way for our 25th anniversary. Thanks for the beautiful photos!

Kim, this would make a lovely anniversary trip destination. Tim and I love it so much that we spent part of our honeymoon in Gold Beach. That was 26 years ago.

My husband and I visited a friend in Portland in May 2016 and she took us out to Rockaway Beach and Cape Mears. I thought they were stunning. After seeing your pics though I think Myers beach looks even more gorgeous and I want to visit (also because it’s my last name!) – if only airfare from the east coast was cheaper!

Loved my journey along the coast during the holidays. Beaches were fantastic and I especially visited many of the lighthouses. So much fun and so many more hidden places to explore in future trips. Safe travels you two.

Thank you Terry. We only got to one of the lighthouses on this journey, but there are several beauties along the route on up to Portland.

All favorite places of mine, Joanne! Thanks for the reminder. The rocks are always gorgeous. Peggy and I head out on Monday to backpack the 40-mile Rogue River Trail. It’s a conditioning trip for my thousand mile backpack trip this summer from Mt. Ashland to Mt. Whitney. I’ve wanted to do the Rogue trip for quite some time! –Curt

Curt, you and Peggy are way more adventurous than I am. Perhaps I would take on a 40-mile backpack trip if I could take it at a slow pace, had someone to carry my pack, cook my meals and a bed to sleep in each night. 😬 But taking on a thousand mile trip would be WAY, WAY beyond anything I could/would try to do. Impressive!

I’m an east coaster as well, born in the mid-west and raised in the south, but always had something of a fascination for Portland Oregon. I have it on my bucket list, but I think now, I might just want to move there and see the rest of Oregon too.
And that’s saying something; I was born in Ohio and it’s pretty green here, but I also grew up in South Florida, and lived in North Carolina (which is just plain stunning too, though in a wholly different way). Thank you!

Cherilyn, it sounds like you have lived in a variety of different places. Oregon would be a wetter climate than you are probably used too, but the spring, summer and fall are usually pretty mild. I know I’m rather partial to Oregon, having been born in Medford, but I still find it amongst the most beautiful places on earth. Portland is more of a “city”, but has a great “foodie” reputation.
