Beartooth Highway ~ America’s Most Beautiful Drive (Part 2)

July 11th ~ Beartooth Highway (Day 2)

Beartooth Highway

The weather had been dismal the day before, so we decided to give the Beartooth Highway a second chance to WOW us. I’m so grateful that we did!

In yesterday’s blog post I told a little bit about the drive, extreme weather we encountered with an unexpected hail storm, and being surprised by a unicycle rider climbing the mountain.

Today I just want to allow the pictures to speak for themselves, to show why the Beartooth Highway now has my (and Charles Kuralt’s) vote for America’s Most Beautiful Drive.

We are off on another adventure…

Herd of Big Horn Sheep

Snow surrounding the lake

Majestic Rock

Closer perspective

Would have loved to take one of these for a spin on the lake

Reaching for the sky

Lone bench – perfect place for our picnic

Looks like a nice place for a golf course to me 🙂

More of my favorite color

Tim soaking up the sunshine and the view

Mr and Mrs Marmot

Marmot checking us out

Just because

This is how the Beartooth Highway got its name. Can you see the Bear’s Tooth?

Here is a close up of the tooth, just in case…

The wild flowers were everywhere. Such beauty and diversity

Hard to beat this view

We found a lovely family where we took turns taking photos for each other

This was my favorite of the two

Trailhead

To this overlook of the valley below

So tiny and delicate – Had to be careful where we walked

The high mountain lakes were everywhere

Look carefully to see the roadway we traveled

Yellow with a smattering of blue set off the white mountains in the background

Each one is more beautiful than the last

Walking on snow, taking in the vista

And that was our day on the Beartooth Highway!

GRATITUDE MOMENT: Today I am grateful that we have the time and flexibility to stay longer in a place. Our second day where we backtracked 3/4 of the way toward Yellowstone, it allowed us to revisit the highlight view spots, travel down some side roads off the beaten path, have a delightful picnic lunch, catch some sunshine, and more fully appreciate why this highway has been named, “America’s Most Beautiful Drive”.

NEXT STOP: Bozeman, Montana where we visit the fabulous dinosaur exhibit at Museum of the Rockies.

  9. Stunning scenery! So glad you like to take pictures of the small flowers, too. I like the big and the little. Favorite is the one of you in the snow with the mountains behind. Just gorgeous. We’ll have to put this spot in our plans for next year. Thanks for sharing.

  13. And we thought our three and a half *week* road trip last fall was epic. But it was still phenomenal. Love that part of the country and can’t wait to go back. btw, thanks for stopping by my blog.

    • Three weeks or three months – I’d be happy with either one as long as we were together and exploring. One of our best trips ever was our first trip to Yellowstone years ago. We spent 10 days there and had an AMAZING and memorable trip.

Is there still a gravel road up the mountain on the other side of the valley on the Red Lodge side of the pass? That was something that always amazed me.

I’m not sure they still have it, but 30 or so years ago, they ran a ski camp from the top of the pass for Olympic skiers and hopefuls, usually in the middle of June.

I will be in the Glacier area next week. If you are still around, and would be interested, I would love a meetup. Plans are to travel the 22nd and will be in the area (Flathead and north) until the 26th.

I’m looking forward to your report on the Museum of the Rockies.

    • I’m not sure if that road is still traveled or not. We may still be in Glacier, but I’m not positive. Our friends are joining us in a couple more days. Our plans are rather fluid at the moment, but if it could work out, we would love it.
