Waiting for sunset at Horseshoe Bend
After such a thrilling morning at Antelope Canyon, we returned to Ellie Mae for lunch and sorted through hundreds of pictures. As much as I LOVE photography, sometimes more is not always better. But, I was pleased with what we got and thankful we had such brilliant lighting.
We had some time to explore in the afternoon before our evening plans to visit Horseshoe Bend for some sunset pictures. I wanted to try to find an overlook or scenic view point that would give me a birds-eye view of Lake Powell. The office staff at our RV park recommended Wahweap Overlook.

On the way there we crossed over Glen Canyon Bridge and spotted Glen Canyon Dam. Right next door is the Carl Hayden Visitor Center which is worth a stop if you have the time. They filled us in where to go to get a better shot of the dam as well.

But the real highlight for our evening was our sunset viewing at Horseshoe Bend Overlook. Located on Highway 89, only two miles outside of the town of Page, it is a MUST SEE. We arrived about 7:00pm and sunset was scheduled for 8:30ish.
The area is dry, red and hot
The walk from the parking lot to the overlook site is about a one mile hike. It starts off for the first tenth of a mile uphill, but then the rest of the way there is an easy down hill walk. Don’t forget to bring water. There is no shade, so I’m not sure I would want to tackle this during the heat of the day when it is over 100 degrees.
I am often disturbed when I see people line up so close to the edge of a cliff. I sometimes just have to look away. Boy was I shocked to see how close I was to the edge in one of these pictures. Can you spot me with my blond hair and sun glasses???

But, the view was magnificent and I got the picture I had been hoping for as the sun was setting and clouds reflecting in the water.

GRATITUDE MOMENT: What a day this was from start to finish with a visit to Antelope Canyon and then topped off with the stunning view at Horseshoe Bend. I am a VERY happy (and tired) lady this evening. Good night all…

I am such a coward, and always the one to play it safe. Was a bit startled by how close to the edge I was. From where I was sitting, it looked much further. But you will NEVER catch me dangling over the edge. ((shivering at the thought)).

You are brave! We just got back from there. It was a windy day and I was so afraid to get close to the edge. Of course it pays off and your photos are AMAZING!

What a wonderful place to watch the sunset. Your photos are just spectacular! I’m with you about the edges. I won’t get near them and when my husband gets to close I get REALLY nervous!

Superb once again. I remember going to Horseshoe Bend but during the day – I don’t remember it being a mile hike though. Strange how memory works (or doesn’t).

Anabel, I did not see anything posted on the distance. That is what I was told it was. Perhaps a slight bit off, but I think that was pretty close, anyway I hope so.

I’m sure you’re right, it’s just the way getting there has completely disappeared from my memory that puzzles me but I remember the view. Maybe because we have photos and maybe didn’t take any on the way.

The distance has been “somewhat officially” measured at .6 miles one way 🙂

I have seen many pictures taken during the daylight, but sunset shots were my favorite.

Great sunset pic with the clouds reflected! 🌞
We stayed at Wahweap campground for a week and did a boat tour on the Lake, and a raft trip from the dam down to horseshoe bend and back, plus a ride over to Lee’s ferry and Vermillion Cliffs, in addition to Antelope and Horseshoe Bend from above. What a gorgeous area!
