Murren sits on the side of a cliff, Schilthorn towers high above

July 25th ~ Murren, Switzerland

Murren, Switzerland

Murren, Switzerland

First a little more about Murren. It basically sits on the side of a cliff overlooking a large valley far below. We took a cable car and then a small train to get from the valley up to our hotel. This map will give you better idea of where Murren is situated.

If you look at the bottom right corner of the map, you will see the town of Lauterbrunnen. Follow the black line half way up the map. This is the cable car route up. Then going to the left is a black line which is the small train we took to Murren. Where the black line stopped is where we got off the train. Our hotel was located right across the street.

The town itself is not very big and you can walk from one end to the other in about ten minutes. At the opposite end of town, you can see where the big cable car line (about where that bright red banner is on this map) will take you to the very top of the mountain – Schilthorn.

That was our main excursion for the day, but the weather gods were not cooperating. The top of the mountain, Schilthorn was completely socked in. The clouds descended upon the peak, and you could not see beyond a few feet in front of you.

Going up the cable car. Not too bad down in the valley.

But not so pretty at the top…

Can't see very far :(

Can’t see very far 😦

The round building is a restaurant that rotate 360 degrees so that you can enjoy the view in all directions while eating. It was empty when we looked in. (This was the location of the villains compound in the movie mentioned below).

Oh well...

Oh well…

We had been forewarned before we paid and left Murren, but we still wanted to go. Thankfully, with our Swiss Pass we got 50% off of the ticket price.

This is where the James Bond, 007 movie, “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” was filmed and a small museum about it was on top.

GRATITUDE MOMENT: Today I am grateful for the technology that developed cable cars, trams, funiculars and cog trains that allow us to get to the top of mountains without having to hike all the way up.

I am sorry it was foggy, but so glad you got to go to such a special place. that town looks lovely. I love the traditional half-timbered swiss homes with all the pretty flowers in the windows.

One of our all time favorites. Still vividly remember walking down from the mid-station on a May morning. Wish the weather was better for you and am enjoying hitching a ride with you via the blog. Happy travels.
