Maui – The road to Hana

Taking the road to Hana has been on my wish list since the 1970’s when I visited Maui for the first time. I was so excited when booking an all-day tour that would pick us up in Lahaina, drive across the island to Kahului, then make the big loop that would include the seven sacred pools at Hana, continue around the dry side of the island, eventually returning to our ship.

Our internet speed onboard the ship is pitiful at best, so I will try to upload a few pictures from the day and leave it at that.

Tim unintentionally left his camera on a watercolor setting and came up with some interesting pictures. I especially liked the rooster picture, but wanted to share some of his other shots as well:

Gratitude Moment: Today I am grateful that after 40 years, I finally got to experience the road to Hana. It was a wonderful, scenic, winding, spectacular trip!

  2. Absolutely loved Maui & Hana. Rented a car & drove the famous road taking all day to photograph the beautiful scenery. Actually stayed in Hana a couple of days. I will never forget this experience. It’s like a different world. Enjoyed your photos.

    • Sandra, I would have loved to spend a couple of days in Hana. We wore our swimming suits under our clothes all day, planning on getting into the pools. Then our time ran out and we had only enough time to snap a few pictures and get back on the bus. Great excuse for a return visit don’t you think?

The road to Hana is not soon to be forgotten…Some tourists think that because Hana is so famous there must be quite a town there. This is lliving and graphic proof that it’s about the journey, not the ddestination….

So enjoyed your post. It reminded me of our first time on the road to Hana last May, and like you, we waited many years to do it. We drove from Kapalua to Hana, then reversed our drive over the same road. We were advised to not take the loop road in a rental car to the dry side. I want to return again and drive past Hana, though, to see more of those great sights that you saw.

Great pictures and what a wonderfully beautiful place. Glad that you can cross this off your bucket list. We opted for a tour when we visited consisting of a van trip to Hana and a helicopter back via the rugged side of the island not easily accessible by car/van. It was truly the highlight of our visit (well maybe it ties with the bike ride down Haleakala. Enjoying reliving the islands through your blog.

    • I bet the helicopter trip was a great adventure. I took a helicopter over the volcano in the 1975 and still remember it today. The bike ride coming down from the volcano is a little past my comfort level now, but what a rush that must be!

We love the trip of the road to Hana and had an entire day to jump into most of the pools and swim in most of the unique beaches. It was a marvelous journey and one that I will treasure always. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
