White Temple (Wat Rong Kuhn)
Chiang Rai, Thailand ~ More a labor of love, than a money-maker, the artist Chalermchai Kositpipat has used his own funds to create this visual masterpiece. This is a place of worship, but also an artistic creation. Instead of the normal multi-colored hues, he chose white which symbolizes the purity of Lord Buddha.

No admission is charged, but a small donation is accepted. No photography is allowed inside.
GRATITUDE MOMENT: Today I am grateful for the generosity and spirit of those like this artist who have an amazing vision, belief and talent. This man’s gift will enlighten, entertain and bring great joy to many for generations.

We were there a couple of months ago. The architecture is amazing. I found the inside to be quite strange with all of the references to American pop culture like Spiderman and Minions. Still really enjoyed the visit.

Clay, I heard that the White Temple suffered some earthquake damage after we were there. Did you see any signs of it, or is everything all repaired? The artist originally wanted to tear it all down after it was damaged, but quickly changed his mind. I wish that pictures could have been taken inside.

I don’t recall any damage that was done to the White Temple. There was some construction on some of the other buildings on the grounds, but I’m not sure if that was because of an earthquake or just routine maintenance.

It was so unique compared to the normal extremely colorful temples. Quite impressive really.

Aww, I got to visit Thailand when I was in 4th grade and didn’t care about the world. Now that I’m thinking of it, I wanna go back asap!! Totally creeping on your Thailand posts right now, love the pictures 🙂

This is definitely one of the most intricately designed and oddly interesting temples I’ve visited. I couldn’t get over the detail of the artwork surrounding the temple especially the crowd of hands creeping up!

The fact that it was all in white already made it stand out from the multitude of colorful temples we visited in Thailand. Got to love this artists creativity!
